CANDIDATES' THE COMMON INTEREST IN ACTION SCORE
The Common Interest in
Action Score reflects the percentage of Common Interest in Action
positions that a candidate supports. The Common Interest in Action
takes positions when there is a consensus of two-thirds or more on a given
proposal among the more than 100 members randomly assigned to review our
policy brief for that issue. The Past Score reflects issues on
which we took positions that have already been voted on by both the House
and the Senate. The Future Score reflects positions that we have
taken that have not yet come before both the House and the Senate for
votes. The Past Score for incumbents is based on their actual
votes. The Future Score for incumbents, as well as the Past
and Future Scores for challengers, are based on candidates' answers
to our questionnaire.

| Statement by Candidate about Why Running: |
| |
I am running for the State Senate in District 9 to provide a
new voice and a new perspective in the Idaho legislature. I plan
to be a strong advocate for the middle class and for small businesses,
and for farmers and ranchers. I will vote to preserve Idaho's
quality of life, and to provide adequate funding for our public
schools, local government, health care and senior programs. I
will listen to all persons and seek to assure openness in government,
and to promote ways to bring good jobs to Idaho. The 2008 legislature
failed to act on child care standards, early childhood education
and reasonable funding for transportation needs. At present there
is no requirement that child care providers do background checks
on their workers. Early childhood education pays big dividends,
$1 invested yields up to $19 in returns. Raising car registration
to $150.00 is not a reasonable way to address our transportation
needs, especially with the high cost of gas, diesel, and food
that hurts working families and creates more economic injustice.
I will work for a fair tax system that will phase out the sales
tax on groceries. My opponent voted in 2006 for a sales tax increase,
which has hurt District 9 small businesses and consumers. I will
run on the Democratic ticket, but will take a non-partisan approach
to issues and will vote my conscience and not the party line.
I feel special interests have too much influence in legislature.

| Candidate Statement about The Common Interest: |
| |
The Common Interest appears to focus on important issues to
Idaho. I expect to listen and work with you on those issues. I
am willing to contribute time to research an issue. I often write
book reviews for the Weiser Signal American on non-fiction library
books on current economic and international issues. |
| Candidate Bio: |
| |
I served for 9 years as a non-partisan District Judge. I
was born and raised in a large family of 9 children in rural
Idaho, earned an Eagle Scout award, worked my way through college
and law school at Stanford University, served as a Deputy Prosecuting
Attorney, Special Assistant Attorney General, and as a JAG officer
in the U.S. Army Reserves. I am married to Margaret Fuller,
who writes Idaho trail guide books. I have 5 children and 5
grandchildren. I work part time as a mediator and arbitrator.
I serve on the board of the Weiser Senior Center and the Elderly
Opportunity Agency, as a Kiwanis Club officer, as a church leader,
and on the national board of the National Forest Homeowners.
I am an avid hiker and have served in scouting as Council Advancement
Chairman as a Vice President. |
| Candidate Statement on Partisan Politics
and Special Interests: |
| |
I think a bi-partisan approach to issues produces better
legislative solutions. |
